Blog 2: Theme Project - Social Innovation
The class was originally split up into four groups. These groups consist of social innovation, arts and culture, community well-being, and last but not least environment and sustainability.
The PowerPoint for this presentation had to cover certain areas about the topics. Some of these were American perspective versus world perspective, the topic’s history, and local and national associations and organizations. We were also required to do an interview of some sort whether it was AI or with someone. My group consisted of six people, so we decided to have some topics completed solo and others in a group of two. We decided to make our topic about homelessness since this is an ongoing problem worldwide. I completed the research about American’s views versus the global perspective. Daniela Munoz and Rodney Santana completed the history of homelessness section. Lester Montes Ce Oca and Sebastian Jelves completed the AI interview with the homeless person. Amanda Leon completed research about local and national associations and organizations related to homelessness.
Researching about the different perspectives of the world versus Americans was very interesting. Across the globe, there are similar causes as to why people are homeless. Many Americans believe the cause of homelessness is due to the high prices of homes, the shortage of affordable homes, mental illness, substance abuse, & poverty. when it comes to who is responsible for it, Americans blame the government saying it is their responsibility. others don’t see it that way. Instead of saying it is the government fault, most think it is society instead. The definition of homelessness can be seen differently across the globe. Some countries include those in temporary shelters and overcrowded housing homeless, while others do not. It is globally estimated that 150 million people are homeless and 1.6 billion lack adequate housing. Our group also spoke about homelessness existing since the founding of the United States. When I first heard the statement, it shocked me but also made complete sense. Not everyone has the same level of comfortability. In the beginning of this project, we planned on interviewing a homeless person that someone in the group knows, but it didn’t end up working out. By using AI, we got a similar response to what the interviewee could have stated if she was interviewed. The end of the presentation spoke about organizations within Miami Dade that help homeless people. It’s important to make these resources known. Even though the listener might not need it, this information could be useful for someone they know.
The PowerPoint template we used for this assignment was very cute. It was white and baby blue with stars. The first two sides of the PowerPoint were about the history of homelessness. The next two slides were my part. I decided to put American’s perspective first and then global perspective in another slide so it wouldn’t be mix it up while presenting. After that the AI interview was next. It had four slides that contained one with the questions and the rest the responses. The next slide contained information about organizations, so our audience would know who to reach out to if someone they know ever needs help.
Today we filmed our seven minute videos for each perspective topic. I personally had quite a few retakes because I either mixed up the words or got interrupted. This was a fun experience, even though I look a little crazy in the video. When I wasn’t on camera, I was in charge of our makeshift teleprompter. We used an iPad with everyone’s notes to make less mistakes when filming. I wasn’t sure if we were going to finish making our video before class ended. We managed to finish filming right before the end. Overall, I believe we did a pretty good job. It was a little tricky to summarize everything while making it informative, but everyone made it work.
One thing my group should improve before the symposium is our outfit coordination. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but we need to look professional. Another thing I should improve personally is reading less from the PowerPoint. I feel like my first presentation was better in this sense. Even though I had flashcards, my presentation was practically memorized with how many times it was rehearsed. With this presentation, I had less information so the number of times it was reviewed was significantly less compared to before.
The other group presentations were very nice. Some people were nervous but that is only something you can get rid of overtime with experience. I felt like their slides were very informational. I especially liked the presentation from environment and sustainability. The graphs made their information easier to digest. It was also accompanied by a video that was very informational.
The only thing left for this project would be the symposium. Even though it has slightly different information, the topics are the same. For the next project, we will have seven people since the art and culture group disbanded. I feel like this will make it easier for the next assignment because we will be able to research more information for the debate. Our group is planning to work on the topic of whether drinking should be allowed at a younger age. This debate is backed up by a lot of facts instead of opinions. With this information we can form a sound argument. We haven’t decided what aspects of this topic we will be debating about yet. With this, I will be concluding my "Blog 2: Theme Project - Social Innovation" entry. Don’t forget to like and share with family and friends!
Thanks for reading and as always, stay tuned for any upcoming and future blog updates or events!
